Home > Food & Drink > Fictional alcoholic drinks

Most of us out there have had many hangovers after one to many Budweisers or Heinekens, but when watching some of my favourite TV shows, I can't help but watch in envy as some of the characters drink a brand of beer I will never have the opportunity to taste myself. For that reason, I have put together a collection here of fictional alcoholic beverage brands I would most like to try....

1) Duff Beer

Duff is the most widely known fictional beer in the world due to its constant appearances in The Simpsons. It is a parody of stereotypical commercial beer: moderately priced, poor-quality, and advertised everywhere. It is revealed on a Duff Brewery tour in "Duffless" that regular Duff, Duff Light, and Duff Dry are the same beer, although Homer and Barney apparently remain oblivious to the fact. Matt Groening has stated that he will not license the Duff trademark to brew an actual beer, over concern that it would encourage children to drink. However, there have been a few notable cases of individual companies and persons who have used the term "Duff Beer" with varying success.

2) Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster

The Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is an alcoholic beverage invented by ex-President of the Universe Zaphod Beeblebrox, from the science fiction story The Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy, and is largely considered to be the best in the Universe. Its effects are so severe that drinking it is considered "similar to having your brains smashed in by a slice of lemon wrapped round a large gold brick." Real versions of the drink have been made available at some stage shows of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, as well as bars such as Zaphod Beeblebrox in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Recipes for these "Earth versions" can be found at Wikibooks. Douglas Adams has stated we are unable to make the real thing here as "there are a number of environmental and weapons treaties, as well as laws of physics, which prevent the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster from being mixed on Earth."

3) Dharma Initiative Beer

Although rarely seen in the Lost series, Dharma Initiative beer is somewhat of a cult beer, as many diehard Lost geeks around the world have re-created the odd brand in their living rooms in celebration of the show. Although, when trying to assatain the quality of the beverage, one would be put off re-creating it, considering it was reffered to in the show as probably being "than Rocky III, and maybe even Rocky II." But most of these guys just copy the packaging, and fill it with a mainstream beer like Coors or Budweiser. The beer was discovered in an abandonded van in the jungle.

4) Romulan Ale

Romulan ale is a highly intoxicating alcoholic beverage of Romulan origin with a characteristic blue color (this can range from a pale sky blue to a dark midnight blue, depending on the "vintage"). It takes a while to ferment and is also used for medicinal purposes. Romulan ale is even a challenge for species as stout as the Klingons, who are usually quite resistant to the effects of alcohol. After drinking a sizable amount of Romulan ale in celebration of William T. Riker and Deanna Troi's wedding in 2379, Worf, obviously suffering its effects, stated that "Romulan ale should be illegal", to which Geordi La Forge replied, "It is." In the past, it was possible to purchase Romulan Ale from the Star Trek Experience at the Hilton, Las Vegas. (Pictured below).

5) Da Bomb

Da Bomb is allegedly "125% pure pleasure", so if thats anything to go by, this must be a damn good drink. It is a malt liquor that is featured in Spike Lee's movie Bamboozled. The bottle is shaped like an old-fashioned bomb, with fins & all, but is actually made out of a 2 litre soda bottle. They also advertise it as being the black viagra, so this drink is quite the cocktail of intoxicating substances that are going to make your night one to remember, or much more likely, forget. Bomb can also be seen in the movies Clockers & Inside Man.

6) Pawtucket Patriot Ale

Pawtucket Patriot Ale is the local brand of beer in Quahog, Rhode Island from the massively popualar comedy Family Guy. Brewed at Pawtucket Pat's brewery, it is Peter Griffin's drink of choice. The name "Pawtucket" comes from the town with the same name, and it is essentially a piss take of the Boston lager Samuel Adams. One advertisement for the ale had the motto "If you buy it, hot women will have sex in your back yard" (You can see the commercial below). This is a beer I would definetly like to try, regardless of the outrageous claim of hot women!

7) Flager Beer

Flager Lager is the beer from the legendary 1980s show Magnum P.I. Tom Selleck has single-handedly made moustaches and chest hair not only acceptable these days, but encouraged. But it's a bit disappointing, however, that the show’s creators were so limited when coming up with ideas for a fake beer that they settled on “Flager Lager”. Maybe it was an inside joke, who knows. But going from the description, and the lame packaging, I think this is a beer that is one to avoid. Not one of the better fictional brews in terms of how appealing it looks!

8) Butterbeer

Although not technically a true beer in the traditoinal sense, this is a beverage that makes my throat feel quite partched whenever I read its description in the books, or witness it being drunk by the characters in the Harry Potter movies. It has a very slight alcohol content, which can get house-elves fully drunk, but seems to have a less pronounced effect on humans. It is described in the books as tasting "a little bit like less-sickly butterscotch." Harry Potter wondered what Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger might do at Professor Horace Slughorn's Christmas Party "under the influence of Butterbeer," indicating that it could lower inhibitions. You can actually buy Butterbeer at the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Universal Studios, Florida, but it is unfortnately a non-alcoholic version.

9) Alamo Beer

Alamo Beer is the beer of the reletively popular comedy show King of the Hill. Its slogan describes iteslf as the beer "From the lukewarm headwaters of the mighty Brazos River", and according to Hank Hill, it also won the 1849 Munich Beer Festival. Hank's wife, Peggy, in one episode worked for Alamo to discover why the shipments of beer were missing. She found out that a small amount of soap accidentaly ended up in the beer, resulting in nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, and that rather than recall it, Alamo was selling the tainted beer in Mexico under the cover of "Testing the Market". Due to its reputation, this is not a beer I am overly eager to try!

10) Bendërbrau Cold-Fusion Stream Beer

Bendërbrau's slogan is the very simple, but yet apt "Let's get drunk!" I like the honesty in that, why beat around the bush with responsible drinking labels, just get straight to the point of what people really want. The flavour is described as "Turbid and silty with a subtle, slightly goat-y finish." Now that sounds like a weird tasting beer! While this beer was never officially released publicly, the Futurama writers are keen amateur brewers and made a real version for themselves. Bottoms up!

11) Leopard Lager

Red Dwarf was an excellent comedy sci-fi series from the BBC is set 3,000,000 years in the future, and set initally solely upon a huge spaceship of the same name. Leopard lager was the beer of choice for the 20th century lager lout from Liverpool, Lister, who played the lead role in the series. Through many innovative skeems and ideas, he manages to procure enough quantites of the stuff from or around the spaceship to accompany his favourite dish, a vindaloo. The beer is always depicted in cans and is brewed by the Jupiter Mining Company.
