We live in a world where a lot of bizarre stuff happens on a pretty much regular basis. Put on the TV or flick open a newspaper for a few seconds and you are pretty much guaranteed to find something pretty weird or abnormal. Sometimes these things are light hearted, and other times they are quite serious. In this poll I have put together a collection of some of the most unusual deaths that have occurred so far in this century.

1) 2009: Sergey Tuganov - Death by Viagra

Sergey Tuganov died after guzzling a bottle of Viagra to keep him going for a 12-hour orgy with two female acquaintances. The women had bet the mechanic $4,300 he wouldn’t be able to follow through with a non-stop half-day sex marathon. But minutes after winning the bet, the 28-year-old died of a heart attack. “We called emergency services but it was too late, there was nothing they could do,” said one of the female participants who identified herself only as Alina. I guess the lovely ladies do not have to part with their cash after all.

2) 2008: Nordin Montong - Death by white tigers

Visitors to the Singapore Zoo watched in horror as Nordin Bin Montong, 32, a Malaysian, was attacked when he jumped into the moat of the white tiger area. It was revealed after the incident that it was no accident, but instead a succesul suicide attempt. He entered the enclosure with brooms and a pail and waved them at the tigers in order to provoke them. Three of the tigers pounced on him, dragging him by the neck to the back of their enclosure. Biswajit Guha, assistant director of zoology at the Singapore Zoo said the noise of the attack caught the attention of nearby keepers and they eventually managed to distract the tigers and rescue Nordin. Zoo vets fought to save the man but he died soon afterwards.

5) 2003: Dr. Hitoshi Nikaidoh - Death by elevator doors

Dr. Hitoshi Christopher Nikaidoh, a surgeon, was decapitated as he stepped on to an elevator at Christus St. Joseph Hospital in Houston, Texas on August 16, 2003. According to a witness inside the elevator, the elevator doors closed as Nikaidoh entered, trapping his head inside the elevator with the remainder of his body still outside. His body was later found at the bottom of the elevator shaft while the upper portion of his head, severed just above the lower jaw, was found in the elevator. A subsequent investigation revealed that improper electrical wiring installed by a maintenance company several days earlier had effectively bypassed all of the elevator's safeguards, and thus enabling it to move under any circumstances.

8) 2008: Isaiah Otieno - Death by helicopter

The son of Kenyan Minister Hon Dalmas Otieno, Isaiah Otieno, was killed when walking along the streets of Cranbrook while listening to an MP3 device. A Bell 206 helicopter came falling out of the sky, hit him directly and then dragged him for 15 metres before coming to a standstill. Friends of Isaiah say he probably didn't hear the helicopter coming due to the music he was listening to. Witnesses ran over to help the lad, but their efforts were in vein as he was already dead. Witnesses also said the helicopter burned so badly during the crash that little remained of the fuselage except for sections of the tail rotor.

9) 2008: David Phyall - Death by chainsaw protest

David Phyall, 58, cut off his own head with a chainsaw in a carefully thought out suicide because he was being evicted. The block where Mr Phyall had his flat was to be demolished and despite great efforts from his housing association, he had refused 11 offers of alternative accommodation. Police officers burst their way into his flat after receiving calls from his elderly parents expressing concern as to why he was not answering his phone. The officers were greeted in his living room by a room saturated in blood and bits of his body in various locations. Futher inquiry into Mr Phyall revealed he has a long history of mental illness, and has on several other occasions attempted to commit suicide. He was the only remaining tennant of the 1960s flats. Now the council are free to rip it down.

10) 2009: Taylor Mitchell - Death by coyotes

On October 27, 2009 Taylor Mitchell was hiking alone during the afternoon on the Skyline Trail in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia. During her hike, she was attacked by two coyotes. While she was being attacked some other hikers came across her and managed to scare the animals away and called 911. When emergency crews arrived, she was taken to a hospital in Cheticamp and then airlifted to Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre in Halifax in critical condition where she died overnight. The coyotes were introduced on Cape Breton Island in the 1970s by park wildlife officials to control a rabbit population that threatened new tree seedlings. Mitchell was only the second fatal coyote attack on a human ever recorded in North America. The first occurred in the United States in August 1981, when 3 year old Kelly Keen was attacked by a coyote outside her home in Glendale, California, United States.
